Trade Routes are manually set up on game start based on their Region and Religion, according to the historical flow of goods.
These initial Routes are Dynamically redefined whenever the current holder’s Faith or
Capital Province Region changes.
While Regions define the likelihood of a good reaching a certain point, Religion is the most important delimiting factor for trade contacts to happen.
1.
Trade Regions
Dynamic Trade Routes defines different Trade Regions for all duchies, mainly as subsets of
Regions defined in Vanilla (see image above). Some
duchies are also relocated, such as:
Flanders belongs to the
Northern France trade region and not to
Germania.
Brittany belongs to the
Celtic trade region—including Goidelic- and Brythonic-speaking areas—instead of
Francia.
Pomerania belongs to the
Baltic trade region rather than to
Germania.
Catalonia belongs to the
Southern France trade region instead of
Iberia.
Region Modifiers
Each Productive Barony exports a percentage of its Production to other Regions, based on its defined Trade Region. These are the modifiers:
- Main Subregion: 80%. Within the traditional realm or very close ties.
- Main Region: 60%. Close geographical or historical (trade, diplomatic) ties.
- Neighbor Region: 30%. Relatively important (direct or indirect) geographical or historical contacts.
- Distant Region: 10%. Indirect geographical or historical contacts.
- Other Regions: 1%. Level “Hey I found this rare good”.
If the holder of a productive barony has its Capital Province in a different Trade Region than the one initially defined for it, that region will also be considered Main Subregion for the purposes of trade.

2.
Trade Religions
During the Middle Ages, usual trade happened between regions under rulers of the same religion, and inter-religious interactions—while possible—were rare. Common examples of inter-religious contacts are networks set up by Jewish communities or by
Republics in the Mediterranean.
Dynamic Trade Routes defines a set of common relationships between different Religions or
Faiths.
Religion Modifiers
Each Productive Barony exports a percentage of its Production to other religious groups based on its defined Trade Religion. These are the modifiers:
- Main Faith: 100%. Own Faith or Religion
- Main Religion: 75%. Traditionally associated Faith or Religion in the Region.
- Neighbor Religion: 50%. Traditionally not hostile Faith or Religion, or with active trading partners, in the Region.
- Distant Religion: 10%. Other close Faiths or Religions which could occasionally be trading partners in the Region.
- Other Religions: 1%.
A change in Religion by the holder of a Productive Barony will have a variable effect, depending on the predefined religious change:
Orthodox to
Catholic or vice versa:
- The new faith becomes Main Faith, the older faith becomes Main Religion.
- All other Trade Religions remain the same.
- Change among the main Indian Religions –
Hinduism,
Buddhism,
Jainism – will not result in any change.
- Every other change will mean the new holder’s
Religion (or
Faith, in the case of
Orthodox vs.
Catholic vs.
Other Christians) will become the Main Faith, whereas all other defined Trade Religions will lose one level of export: from Main Faith to Main Religion, from Main Religion to Neighbor Religion, etc.).
